The Route From Anchorage to Denali

Shortly after you depart from Anchorage, the heavy birch forests of Eagle River and Chugiak lead to the Knik and Matanuska rivers. This expansive watershed harbors wildlife like moose, bear, and abundant waterfowl. About 40 miles from Anchorage is the Matanuska Valley, Alaska's agricultural center and home to the towns of Palmer and Wasilla.

On the George Parks Highway, as you near Talkeetna, begin watching for southern views of Mt. McKinley. Continue north, crossing sparkling salmon streams and driving through spruce and birch forests. When the fireweed is blooming, the roadsides are a sea of pink.

As you near Denali, you'll begin to climb up to tree line and then up to Broad Pass in the Alaska Range. Enjoy expansive views of sub-arctic tundra, and watch for migrating caribou in the fall.
